If off-road riding is the stage where riders challenge their limits, then the two-stroke engine is the wildest note played on this stage. In rugged, remote terrains, two-stroke off-road motorcycles have maintained their dominance thanks to their lightweight design, agile handling, and easy starting. But why haven’t all manufacturers embraced this segment? Why have only KTM, Yamaha, and now Husqvarna emerged as the key players in the two-stroke market?
The answer is simple. Major motorcycle manufacturers once pursued four-stroke dominance, leaving a gap in the market when others abandoned two-strokes. KTM seized this opportunity, and Yamaha later joined the fray with its YZ250X. While KTM still leads, Husqvarna and Yamaha are closing the gap. In extreme off-road conditions, the 300cc engine stands out for its strong low-end torque and superior traction, making it the preferred choice for conquering challenging terrain. Today, we focus on the 2016 Husqvarna TE300—a masterpiece from a historic brand, infused with cutting-edge technology.
At the heart of the TE300 lies its 300cc two-stroke engine, with a bore and stroke of 72mm (compared to 66.4mm x 72mm for the 250cc version). It features a six-speed transmission, adjustable map switch, tunable power valve (via spring replacement), Boyesen reed valve, Keihin carburetor (36mm), and a finely tuned exhaust system. Notably, the exhaust is relatively quiet but lacks a spark arrestor. The Brembo hydraulic clutch offers a light feel, and the engine includes both kick and electric start. Husqvarna claims a peak output of 54 horsepower.
The TE300’s frame is crafted from chromium-molybdenum steel, laser-cut and robot-welded by WP Performance Systems (the same company responsible for the suspension). Husqvarna chose steel for its ideal balance of torsional rigidity and flexibility, which absorbs impacts and delivers precise feedback. The subframe uses a lightweight three-piece polyamide system, offering greater flexibility than traditional aluminum designs for improved comfort. Integrated grab handles and an air filter box allow quick access for maintenance. The rear swingarm is a single-piece design, eliminating welds for enhanced durability and rider feedback.
The suspension features a linkage system developed over three years, improving stability and traction while absorbing continuous impacts. The WP DCC (Dual Compression Control) rear shock matches the front geometry, and the TE300 sports a new 22mm front axle with revised fork legs for better stability. CNC-machined triple clamps (22mm offset) ensure agility and balance.
The 4CS fork settings have been adjusted for the new geometry. While controversial, the updated valving addresses some softness issues, though adjustments primarily affect high-speed damping—less critical for off-road riding. Husqvarna equips the TE with off-road essentials: a 2.9-gallon fuel tank, endurance lighting, a compact odometer, Neken handlebars, and robust pivot-mounted handguards. The Dunlop AT81 tires and Brembo brakes are top-tier, and the GKS brake discs complement the setup.
Starting: The TE300 fires up effortlessly with the push-button or kickstarter, though the electric start offers instant gratification.
Power: The engine excels at low RPMs, delivering smooth, tractable power ideal for technical terrain. The adjustable map switch offers "Standard" (for general off-road use) and "Enhanced" (for hill climbs) modes.
Transmission: The six-speed gearbox pairs well with the Brembo hydraulic clutch, offering precise engagement and easy pull.
Fork: The revised 4CS fork earns a "B" grade—plush with good bottoming resistance, though damping adjustments remain more suited to high-speed impacts.
Shock: Responsive over roots and rocks, the rear suspension maintains traction under hard acceleration. Riders over 185 lbs may need stiffer springs.
Handling: The bike feels flickable, though the seat and tank design could be improved for forward positioning. Suspension balance is a strength, and the bike handles poor inputs gracefully.
Extras: Fuel economy lags behind modern four-strokes. The Dunlop tires and Brembo brakes perform flawlessly, but a spark arrestor is needed for compliance. The Supersprox rear sprocket (aluminum/steel hybrid) and durable chain guides are standout features.
The Husqvarna TE300 remains a top contender for extreme off-road riding. Its potent engine, versatile powerband, and capable suspension make it a fearless companion in the wild. For riders seeking a two-stroke that thrives in adversity, the TE300 is hard to beat.
